Times of change can seem exhilarating and exciting, yet at the same time profoundly scary and unsettling. Into this situation comes the dynamic of prayer a tradition of God s people across many centuries. If we look back through the history of God s involvement with humanity, we discover the richness of the interaction between the divine and the human, shown most clearly in Jesus Christ the one who brings both dimensions together. Above all, our prayers are an opportunity to be as real and honest as we dare remember Jesus entreaty in the Garden of Gethsemane. Father remove this cup from me. But please, not what I want. What do you want? Luke 22:42 (The Message). There is a time and place for the great prayers of the church, but in living life in the 21st century, sometimes the words don t echo true. We need to develop a confidence to pray what our hearts are feeling and what our heads are struggling with. There are different times at which prayer can assist us in our personal devotions, but also when we are called upon to pray publicly. The gift of silence can often be helpful here as it allows others and ourselves to voice personal concerns and joys to God without the need to get the words right . It can also be helpful to use music or art or sculpture or other visual aids to prayer they don t always have to be pebbles and beautiful cloths& Why not use a brick and a trowel as a reminder of the buildings; photographs of people (actual or representative) to remember those whose feelings may be hurt; other symbols of change that are particular to your location or circumstances a map with the new group of churches shown on it; etc& One of the other central reasons for making prayer part of any change programme is that it can involve everyone, whether they wish to be part of the proposed changes or not. We are all equal in the sight of God, but when change is afoot, some can seem more equal than others as knowledge and authority to make decisions can lead to a shift in relationships within the local church. So, what should we pray for in times of change? Are there any right answers to this question? Probably not& the main reason for praying in circumstances of change is to discern the will of God: the more people that pray, the clearer his will can be understood in a variety of ways. Above all, we need to pray for grace that God s will be done and his kingdom come. A prayer by Donald Hilton Lord, we are not here to maintain the status quo, nor yet to change for the sake of it. We are here to do your will; to defend good tradition, to respond to changing situations, and discover the difference between the two. By discussion and debate, and argument if necessary; but certainly by love, help us to do our job well. Amen. Words of reflection by Revd Donald Eadie The testimony to dying and rising can slip off our tongues naively, easily. That is until you look into the faces of those whose bodies bear the process of transition. It is right, I believe, to keep asking , What new thing is God wanting to bring into being among us that can only be discovered when we are prepared to loosed our grip on the past? Learning to let go so that God can take us to places beyond our own planning belongs to the nature of our journey from, in and towards God. 2U@1d &,p @1d(^j$0d2 "$ ,9"D "H "010 " $ ,9" D "1 0 "H$ ,9"HD "1")0 "@M $ ,9"@M D "1 0 "$ ,9"D "1 @1d(8HXhx||||||||||o a shift in relationships within the local church.
